We will be putting together a few templates and How-To guides for the website. In the meantime, here are the fields we discussed and some of the background info to get catalogers started.

The provided buckets contain examples of two different audio players and the Wonderbook, an audio-enabled book.

As always – your mentor is but a phone call or email away 

Compare these two records for the way the differences affect the record and the patron view

Record 2437526: Bib AUTOGENERATED-134254 – Greenwild : the world behind the door (eou.edu) (Playaway)

Record 2439416: Bib 1372156800 – Old school (eou.edu) (Wonderbook)

Cataloging guidelines say that the primary content/format of the material is what should be used to catalog the materials. The carrier is secondary.

* The LDR/008 is determined by the primary content/format of the item being cataloged (LDR/06 and LDR/07 specifically).

* The 006 covers additional/supplementary details not included in the LDR/008. Really the 006 exists because they couldn’t expand the length of the LRD/008 field. 😉

* The 007 is for secondary format details, e.g. carrier information. It’s not related to the content.

Playaway and GoReader

We are cataloging the audio player, not the original recording.

Type (LDR/06): i (non-musical sound recording)

BLvl (LDR/07): m (monograph)

h: Sounds. File has data encoding computer producible sounds.

Electronic resources that are primarily sounds are usually coded for the Type of the most significant aspect (musical or nonmusical sound recording). In such cases, the Computer File 006 is coded for the electronic aspect of the resource, including the File element being coded h for sounds.

Type i

006 Type: m

File: h

516 Sound files.

534s are included if the information is provided on the item.

If the information is not provided by the item, it is cataloger discretion to include ‘Originally recorded/published’ 534 fields.

710s are not necessary for original producers. Original producers are not responsible for the manifestation being cataloged. Playaway, BookBuddy or another ‘packaging’ company is and they get the 264 and 7XX entries.

Pay attention to Playaways. They have at least 3 distribution lines, Hatchette, Kids, and Light.

This information is on the spine and front of the container insert. Desired patron information from the container goes in 500 notes and is cataloger discretion.

=500 \\$a”Playaway kids” — container.

=500 \\$a”The all-in-one audiobook.” — Container.

=500 \\$a”hatchette audio” — container.

For Vox and Wonderbooks, the primary, or what makes them unique, is the audio. Without the audio they are just another monographic text. Thus they should be cataloged as non-musical sound recordings with accompanying text.

We are cataloging the **audio player and a book, but not the original recording.

Key difference – **Wonderbook and VOX include a book. The audio recording is reformatted like the PlayAway and GoReader, but the player is affixed to the book on the cover. Why this matters: The extra 006 and the 710 for the book.

An illustrated book requires the 700 added access point for the illustrator.

The 534 for the attached book’s previously published information requires a 710 for the publisher.

The original/previous publisher information refers to the book attached to the audio player, which is the info that goes in the 710.

If the information for the previously published note does not match the publisher info on the attached book, use the information from the attached book in the 710 and in the 534.
