Discussion notes and time stamps for video recording:

4:37 – ASIN number discussion. Surprise! ASIN numbers are not constant.

17:20 – Decimals or fractions in the 300?

From the LoT Guidelines:You can utilize inch measurements in the 300 $c if that is preferable for patrons‘ but nothing about ‘decimals’ or ‘fractions’ so, Heather S. was kind enough to point us in the right direction 

  • 300 is a recorded field, which is why it has specific terminology. I referred to it as ‘transcribed’ and that was incorrect. There is a good section on the Spanish cataloging resource document (page 2, section 2) describing the difference between ‘transcribed’ and ‘recorded.’
  • Whether using inches or centimeters, don’t use decimals, round up to the next whole centimeter or fractional inch.
  • The reason we use whole numbers for measuring is actually for shelf height and fitting items into the library physically, along with packaging for ILL loans and sending items by snail mail.
  • Normally, the only time we use fractions is for discs.
  • In LoT cataloging – specifically, but not limited to – Sage has allowed for using inches if using centimeters would be cumbersome and/or patrons’ needs are better met with inches.

32:30 – Subject headings *drum roll*

Bonus: Deep dive into genre searching

45:40 – To 710 or not to 710? Is it a worthy search term?
