Library of Things Resources – Staff Resources (sagestaff.org)

Immersion Cataloging’ – Term relieving the cataloger of guilt for playing the kid’s card game or putting the seascape puzzle together or other ‘fully immersed’ interaction with the item to be cataloged in order to derive the best subject headings and genre terms for that item.

5:17 Meeting begins

5:40 Ways for maintaining items and account for pieces and parts

  1. Weighing
  • entire game or puzzle or kit
  • package contents to weigh the components – useful for items with multiple small matching pieces.
  1. Purchase extra items for replacement parts, i.e.: Purchase 2 games, 1 game goes into circulation, 1 game is kept for replacing broken or lost pieces for the other circulating game.
  2. For puzzles and games that have only a few pieces missing and can still be reasonably enjoyed, a label with the missing parts or pieces listed allows patrons to see what the defects are, as well as add any additional notes. This method also helps circulation staff know when an item needs to be pulled from circulation.
  3. Websites for ordering replacement parts.

10:10 Not all game and toy companies will send replacement parts, but it is worth the email or phone call before buying a replacement item.

RPG games (?) and replacement parts: https://meeplesource.com

What is a meeple? A meeple is a small person-shaped token used in some board games to represent a player’s units. ‘Meeple’ was originally said in 2010 in reference to the wooden follower tokens used in the board game Carcassonne. The word is said to be a combination of the words ‘my’ and ‘people’.

Record Creation using record Type o (kit) – can it be a Library of Things holding?

Discussion included icon differences, report needs.

Is it cataloger discretion? No.

Bigger library preferences/trends are record Type r, not o.

Do we repair older records that used kit (Type o) records before the LoT template was created? Not yet.

CONCLUSION: Library of Things records will remain consistent using record Type r. Celine will be attending an MCLS LoT class in May and will try to get more information.

36:00 Working the record.

50:12 300 or 505 for contents?

300 will be immediately visible for patrons

Cumbersome might be better for a 505

54:02 Where does weight get recorded?

Heavy items might be better recorded in the 300

500 notes for cautions of extreme weight or loading requirements

58:57 Soft meeting ending.

1:00:00 Email Celine with questions about LoT collections to ask her instructor and classmates

1:05:00 What is Autocat?
