Celine’s Notes from LoT Class
- 546 multiple languages in manual gets the 546 and 041
- 650 often only subfield a
- Only use $vSpecimens for the specific subject item, not the broad term, i. e.: Digital drum$vSpecimen vs. Electronic musical equipment.
- Contents – 520, 300, 500 – big and bulky 300s? No definitive answer – cataloger judgment
- 505s
- Tmat – only use ‘r’ if nothing else fits. Use narrower term when possible (Type ‘r’ record)
- 3xx – can use multiples for significant parts of your kit, especially for additional icons like book or CD
Please contact Celine to talk more about her class experience.
Correction to video: 55:51
57:31 MeSH subject headings have their own second indicator of ‘2’ – they do not require the $2source tag like the second indicator 7 entries require:
=650 \2$aBlood Pressure Monitors. (correct entry for the MeSH thesaurus)
=650 \7$aBlood Pressure Monitors.$2mesh (Sources are lower case in the $2subfield)
This is why you will also see French (second indicator 6) sourced in a second indicator 7 with the $2rvm French thesaurus code.
I am hoping they assign Spanish headings their own second indicator, soon.
Please contact a mentor when deciding to use a thesaurus besides LoC for the correct field and if sourcing is needed.

Main Take-aways from the 3xx overview:
- Sage does not use the 340 field for queries or patron display purposes
- 336, 337 and 338 DO contribute to icon generation, i. e.; the 336 text entry inserted into a record type that is not ‘Type a’ will generate a book icon beside the record type icon.
- The extra 336 I added for text from our user manual generated the book icon. I removed it.
- According to the Sage RDA manual, since we have adopted the RDA standards and we are expected to use the DVD and audiobook CD added 3xx fields, it can be assumed those standards apply to LoT and other realia items.
- There is a broad gap between what is too much and what is too little. The 3 main elements: content, media, and carrier keep our records RDA compliant. At this time, there are no Sage requirements for any additional 3xx entries.
- If you are interested and have the time, 3xx’s are another facet of cataloging that can be used for patron-friendly linked data – we might be using it sooner than we think.

336Content Type (page 63)
The content type for realia is usually three-dimensional form. This is often confused with the content type tactile three-dimensional form, which is used for resources with content expressed through a form or forms intended to be perceived through touch.
The content type is a categorization reflecting the fundamental form of communication in which the content is expressed and the human sense through which it is intended to be perceived.
337Media Type (page 56)
The media type for realia is usually unmediated.
Media type reflects the general type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource.
338Carrier Type (page 56)
The carrier type for realia is usually one of the unmediated carriers, i.e., object.
Format of the storage medium and housing of a carrier in combination with the type of intermediation device required to view, play, run, etc., the content of a resource.
336, 337, & 338: If none of the terms in the list applies to the resource being described, record other. If the content/media/carrier type applicable to the resource being described cannot be readily ascertained, record unspecified.
340s (Physical Medium) are the Boss: page 59
MARC field 300 subfield $b contains information about other physical details about the item being cataloged. Physical characteristics include illustrative matter, coloration, playing speed, groove characteristics, presence and kind of sound, number of channels, motion picture presentation format, etc.

Subfield $b – Dimensions (found in MARC field 300 subfield $c)
If the form is in a container omit the dimensions of the form itself and record the dimensions of the container. Name the container and record the dimensions of the container (height x width x depth)
This element is repeatable and therefore useful for giving dimensions of individual pieces in a multi-part resource.

380s Form of Work
Core element when needed to differentiate a work from another work with the same title or from the name of an agent. (?)
Contains information about the class or genre to which a work belongs and may be used to differentiate a work from another work with the same title.
