Images: How to save, resize, label, and put in a bucket for Jon

Locate an image:

One method is to go to Amazon or the manufacturer’s website.

Another method is to Google search the title and UPC/Model number, then click on the ‘Images’ selector – the right-click and ‘save image as’ instructions are the same for both methods.

Click on the ‘Tools’ button to view the selection, then select ‘large’ from the size dropdown

After you select or click on the desired image, right click on the image and select ‘save image as’

Save to your image folder with the title of the item and the Record ID number.

The Database ID or Record ID can be found in the Record Summary in the 3rd column under the TCN or in the 001

Now resize your image

From the folder, right click on the image file and select ‘Edit’ – this will open the image in Paint.

Click ‘Resize’ and select ‘Pixels’ in the pop-out. Replace the larger number with 400 and the computer will calculate the proportional smaller number. Click OK and Save.

If you are working with more than 2 or 3 images and records, add the records to a bucket.

When emailing the images to Jon, include the bucket # and the bucket link along with the attached pictures

Subject heading stuff: Free-floating ones, limited usage, and those pesky ‘pattern headings’

Subject Headings (nicheacademy.com)

(4) 20190918 Using LCSH Pattern Headings – YouTube

Double-checking imported record subject and genre headings needs to be second nature. Not everybody who works at the big libraries understand the nuances of subfields and sourcing genres. Taking subject data strings at face value is a cataloger no-no. When importing records with these ‘specialized’ subfields, please take the time to authorize them and remove them if necessary.

Assigning subject headings doesn’t need to be fancy – if the subfield does not meet the criteria for usage, use the single field subject heading to be on the safe side.

Mentors LOVE these discussions  and will be happy to work the authorizing process with you, so don’t hesitate to ask for help! (OK… maybe only a couple of us, but even if your mentor doesn’t LOVE authorizing, they will still be happy to help you get good at it.)

These are the examples we explored.

Library applications cannot be directly searched in Authorities and can only be used in specified circumstances. It is not free-floating and must be authorized in a pattern heading (fancy words for the data string).

There are 17 usable entries here: – LC Linked Data Service: Authorities and Vocabularies | Library of Congress (loc.gov)

And 11 here – which is why cross referencing with LOC is so important:

As with any website – use caution and double-check results with LOC before using. Some material is outdated.

Equipment and supplies is both a Subject heading and free-floating subdivision but it has limitations.
