Member Comments & Questions
A question was raised regarding the book cover image that displays in the OPAC. When the image is absent or incorrect, what is the best procedure to undertake to get it fixed? In this case, search the web for the correct image file (with high enough resolution so it will display clearly), save it as a JPG file, and email it to Jon George along with the corresponding Record ID. Sage has a subscription service through Content Café that automatically retrieves images for items. The service retrieves the image based on the first 020 or 024 \1 field in the record. If the order of those fields change, it may end up retrieving a different image.
New Business
Cataloging Chairperson – nominations and selection
With great fanfare and celebration, Celine opened up nominations for her successor as chair. Dea Nowell nominated Lisa Hauner along with Tracy Hayes to assist. Lisa will chair the committee starting with the next meeting in December. Congratulations Lisa (and Tracy)! Celine will assume the role of immediate past chair.
Useful search features and search template
Celine demonstrated the “magic three dots” that are easy to miss on the Staff View on the web client. It is located to the right of the first search field (after the “-“). Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to have the magic three dots open by default. The traditional catalog search is still available which allows these more specific search options. It is unclear at this point when the Traditional View will be phased out, but not anytime soon.
Something new in the Angular catalog is the ability to save custom search templates. For example, a search for title and author scoped to a specific library limited to available items. Be sure, however, to keep your search scoped to the entire Sage system when cataloging.
Delete French subject headings and genres when importing from Z39.50
If your library uses CatExpress or OCLC Connexion, be on the lookout for French subject headings and genre/form headings and delete them when you import them. 650s will generally have a second indicator 6 to show that they come from the French thesaurus, and 655s will be sourced in $2 with a rmfgf source code.
Cataloging series
Remember to not only make necessary and appropriate changes to the record you are importing, but to also check the catalog for previous items in the series for accuracy. Series information often needs to be added to the first book in a series. Notify your mentor if corrections need to be made to earlier records. Good series links help both our patrons and our staff. Ideally, items from the same series in Sage with be consistent with each other through the 8XX fields in their records, AND those series headings will be sourced from the Library of Congress Authorities.
If you are trying to bring in an item and its series title isn’t authorized in the Library of Congress authorities, check to see if there are existing items from that series already in the catalog, and if they have established series headings. If so, follow precedent and use the existing series headings. If no established series headings exist, find the series title according to an alternative authority (e.g. GoodReads, FantasticFiction, NoveList). You must source this information in a 500 note.
Refer to the Sage website for the Series Guidelines and Series Authorities Help documents for more detailed instructions.
Library of Things Discussion Group
This is an informal discussion group where we talk about ALL aspects of Library of Things including cataloging, display, promotions, tips for increasing circulation, and general sharing of information. Contact the new Cataloging Chairperson (which is now Lisa Hauner) if you would like to participate. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. (Next meeting: October 19)
A Library of Things collection typically includes various kinds of nontraditional library items that are available for local circulation. Some examples are cakepans, yard games, tools, small electronics, etc.
Many thanks to Celine for her excellent work as chair for these past two years.
Meeting adjourned at 11:51 AM PDT.
