New Business
ELvl fixed field and imported records
Please delete “8” in the ELvl fixed field as it indicates prepublication level. “M” indicates that the record was created via an automated process, and needs to be reviewed carefully for incorrect or missing information.
Biographies
There is a new document available that provides some guidance on items that contain biographical information. This is not meant to apply necessarily to all biographical material, but rather to assist catalogers with the Biog fixed field specifically. There are five options for this field:
“blank” – Indicates that the item neither contains biographical information nor is a comprehensive biography.
“a” – Indicates that the item is an autobiography.
“b” – Indicates that the item is an individual biography.
“c” – Indicates that the item is a collected biography.
“d” – Indicates that the item contains biographical information but is not a comprehensive biography.
Some key questions from the guidance document to help determine what should go in the Biog fixed field are:
- Is the item fiction? (If yes, then “blank”)
- Is the item collective (i.e. are there multiple subjects?) (If yes, then “c”)
- Is the item comprehensive? (if no, then “d”)
- Is the item autobiographical in nature? (if yes, then “a”)
- Is the item individual in nature? (if yes, then “b”)
The guidance document also contains some examples that the group used as exercises. The document will be updated to include the answers along with some additional notes.
LGBTQ fiction genre coming soon
Currently, Evergreen is having issues with certain text characters. The “+” in LGBTQ+ headings is problematic, and the committee will be notified once a workaround is found.
Library of Things discussion group
For catalogers who have a library of things collection or who are working on one, the committee would like to create an informal discussion group. This area of cataloging presents its own unique challenges and this would be an opportunity to share information and best practices on how to make these collections available. Please contact Celine at cvandervlugt@cityoflagrande.org if you would be interested in participating.
Questions and discussion regarding catalog update
