4. NEW BUSINESS

Be on the lookout for 490s with 0s

There has been an uptick in imported records with untraced series, which shows as a 490 with a first indicator as 0. We want the 490s to be traced, so change the first indicator to 1. Remember that the 490 is for the series information as it is printed on the item. See the newly updated Series Guidelines for specifics.

Any time we have a 490, we also need the 800 or 830. The series link in the catalog is created from these 8xx fields. The series title in the 8xx needs to be authorized. If there is no authorized heading, refer to the newly updated series guidelines for order of preference for series title. Please remember that series authorities need to be checked for every book as the LOC authorized headings can be created a couple of books into the series. If you find inaccurate or outdated series information in an existing Sage record, please contact your mentor.

The updated versions of Series Guidelines and Series Authority help are on the Sage Cataloging web page: https://sagestaff.org/cataloging/

655 Children’s stories

We are seeing numerous records with the incorrect genre 655 \0 (or 7) $aChildren’s stories. Please remove this entry when you import. Also watch for incorrect juvenile subfields in subjects when importing.

Delete any subject heading with $2local.

No: =655 \7 Non-fiction.$2local

Subject headings with second indicator 4

Second indicator 4 subject and genre headings need to be removed when importing. There are three accepted 690\4 headings for Sage listed below and noted on page 6 of the Sage Specific Practices document on the Sage Cataloging Resources web page: https://sagestaff.org/cataloging/

No: =650 \4 Penguins$vJuvenile fiction.

Yes: =690 \4 $aOregon authors.

Yes: =690 \4 $aRead alongs.

Yes: =690 \4 $aBook club kits.

Note on 655 sourcing

All 655 genre headings should be sourced, which means they have a second indicator 7. Please refer to the Sage Specific Practices document for details. The only exceptions to this rule are the two headings below for young adult materials:

=655 \0$aYoung adult fiction.

=655 \0$aYoung adult literature.

New Series Guidelines (Dec 2023) document

This document has been updated and revised. It is on the Sage Cataloging Resources web page. Please take a few minutes to read it over. Download and replace the previous version if you have it saved or printed.

Zines

These are fun fan-fiction, graphic novel style magazines which are usually self-published. They can be challenging to catalog. If you are bringing zines into your library, please contact a mentor for cataloging assistance.

Zoom and GoToMeeting

Depending on the group, you may receive a meeting invitation from either platform.

3xx fields

The 3xx fields are changing rapidly. For example, there is a new 334 that indicates single unit/multiple unit items, which could show up on serial records. These new 3xx fields are not required in Sage at this time, however if you see them in a record, don’t delete them.

Large print westerns

It appears that there are some regular print westerns that are attached to older large print records. This is an error that probably occurred a long time ago. You may come across this issue when requesting large print westerns through interlibrary loan. If this happens, please contact the home library by phone or note on the item so the record and/or item can be fixed.

There are a couple of clues that may indicate the record could contain regular print items instead of large print, for instance many large print items are larger than 19 cm. You can also check publisher, page count, shelving location, and call number for indicators that the item may not be large print.

Please note that there is a difference between “larger print” and “large print” books. We only use the large print moniker for the industry standard font for large print.

NICHE ACADEMY/RDA TRAINING: Class Spotlight!

Cataloging Manga (nicheacademy.com)

Manga and graphic novels have many similar issues – although this video is focused on cataloging manga, many of the instructions and examples apply to graphic novels, as well. Be sure to check out the Original publication note (534 & 765) instructions. This goes hand in hand with the Sage series guidelines portion on manga and graphic novels.

Meeting adjourned at 10:51 am.
