Authority work update—Beth Ross
LTI authorities have been brought in, but cleaning up duplicates is taking a lot of time. Once the duplicates are cleaned up, Beth will be updating the links. So, ongoing project, but making progress. John Brockman apologized for not having demonstrated the R-Click access (in the staff client) to LOC authorities during his recent training. But, in the web client, there is a different route, clicking on an icon, so this will be demonstrated in a web client training in the near future.
Series documentation feedback/questions
The mentors’ recent project, cataloging series on Sage, is documented on the Sage Web: Cataloging > Resources > Sage Series Guidelines (Feb 2019). Please refer to it as you catalog entries needing series statements. If catalogers have questions about a particular series or a general issue, feel free to contact any of the Sage Cataloging Mentors

John and Heather Spry recently worked with CAT2 cataloger, Lisa Hauner, as she had volunteered to clean up the Cedar Cove series by Macomber. This series originally had many variations, duplications, and mistakes. It was a rewarding project, trainers and trainees both learned from tackling this. There will soon be a special contact form on the Sage Cataloging Web for catalogers to submit problem series for cleanup.
Next EVG update = no staff client (late Fall/Winter 2019)
This is the “nuclear” update, as the staff client will no longer be available, and all Sage activities will be on the web client. While there are some problems using the web client, it is important that all libraries become familiar with using the web version now, so the transition is not too abrupt next fall. Q&A related to printing, templates, and buckets followed.
Web client updates/tips – item templates – Character map
John gave brief presentations related to accessing the special characters’ map (diacrytics) and working with item templates on the web client. (~17:00) Dea reported there are some problems having new template edits “populate”, so catalogers should be aware. John also demonstrated how catalogers can make new item templates on the web client. There will be more trainings soon related to working on the web client.
Instructions for setting up and logging into the Evergreen web client can be found on the Sage Web > Blog. https://sagelib.org/blogs/setting-and-logging-evergreen-web-client
Beth is planning on putting together several shorter, topic specific trainings, to access via YouTube on the Sage web.
Website/Youtube changes (Reorganization/folders)
Beth and Jon have plans to clean up and reorganize the resources on the Sage web. They hope to model the SCLENDS resource page https://guides.statelibrary.sc.gov/sclends-info/marc-and-rda as part of this new resource tool.
BTW, John Brockman highly recommends The RDA Workbook: Learning the Basics of Resource Description and Access by Margaret Mering, for catalogers preparing to advance to RDA cataloging input standards. Several copies are available on Sage for ILL.
Upcoming projects
Library of Things:
Some libraries are already cataloging items into their “Library of Things”, which can be a cataloging challenge. Mentors still have to work out all of the guidelines and terminology for entering these types of objects. There is a new 999 term, in subfield “f”: $flot Hood River just recently added several “LOT” items to their catalog, and you can view these by using Advance Search > Search Filters > Library of Things.
Subject Headings and new demographic fields:
Mentors will be providing more guidelines related to uniform entries in the 6XX fields, without producing a comprehensive document similar to the series’ guidelines. Examples needing clarification include avoiding redundancies, selecting faceted headings, ordering 6XX fields. Laurie asked for guidance on preferred subject sources, and how to handle BISACH entries on Sage. There are new cataloging inputs related to demographics in 3XX fields rather than current entries in 6XX. These include fields 386 creator characteristics (such as performer or artist) and 385 audience characteristics (reading levels or special interests). Remember, do not remove any fields that you do not recognize, as these may become key tracing fields in the future. Beth will be sharing documentation about these fields in the future. Requests for training topics
Any suggestions on how to motivate more catalogers to attend the committee meetings and to take or view the trainings available on the Sage web? It seems the better catalogers seek more training, but many needing to improve do not. John and Beth discussed a new training platform, Niche Academy, that would allow us to monitor who is attending trainings. Sage may purchase a license, depending on the cost. This would allow us to set a minimum number of hours of professional development in order to keep cataloging permissions on Sage.
