Cataloging Committee-February 3 2020

Sage Catalog Committee Meeting 2/3/2020

Attendees: John Brockman, Heather Spry (Baker) ; Beth Ross, Jon George (Sage) ; Dea Nowell (Umatilla) ; Mary Reser (Gilliam) ; Lisa Hauner (Oregon Trail) ; Valeria Gardner (Ontario) ; Marsha Richmond (Klamath) ; Abbey Phelps (Sherman).

Minutes

John asked if we wanted to motion to approve minutes, Dea motioned to approve minutes, Beth seconded. Minutes were approved as presented.

Upgrade

Beth and Jon Georg deserve all the kudos for the implementation of the upgrade and fixing all the problems we’ve been having so far.

Beth is going to put together a video for the Marc batch import since it looks different than it did before, and she has been approached by a couple individuals about it. They’re going to look at item alerts in the future, and she has transitioned all the item notes and alerts from the staff client to the web client.

All the weird visual discrepancies are almost always solved by clearing the cache and refreshing.

Item tags are now Digital Bookplates, a visual representation of collections. These are generally used for OBOB, memorial items, Libros for Oregon and other collections that your library wants your patrons to be able to search and find in the catalog. There is a search option in the drop down menu with keyword, author, title, at the bottom for the Digital Bookplates.

OPAC oriented: The new book carousel that was on the search page in the patron view, at this point, isn’t updating due to a bug. This has since been updated and is customizable by library. If you want to feature specific collections, you can put items into a bucket and then convert that bucket to a carousel.

Beth is going to Thailand! And she promises to come back to us. Spoiler: she did come back.

Barcode 979

In 2020 the new 979 barcodes are going to be rolling out. In addition to 978, there will now also be 979; however, with the 979 there is no 10-digit equivalent. This is mostly a heads up so there is no surprise, make sure not to attempt to convert it to 10-digit, they’re fine as is and please do not change it to 978. The fourth digit for these is 8 (e.g. 9798), please leave barcodes as you’ve scanned them or type them as is on the resource.

Binge Box templates

Cook Memorial Library has contacted the mentors to create a “Binge Box” template, which has been created and will be put on the website. If you have something like this that you want to create for your library but are unsure of how to catalog it, please contact your mentor to help! This template is currently very specific so if you are doing a binge box with foreign films or Blu-ray discs, then you will need to add more fields.

Goals for the year

John’s chair position ends in October and there are two goals he wishes to accomplish before his term ends. He wants to form two subcommittees, one for Cataloging level qualifications and for RDA adoption. Anyone who is potentially interested in either subcommittee should email John at (cataloger@bakerlib.org).

Summaries

Summaries are contained in 520 fields, with which we should be familiar. Your summaries should generally all be sourced. If you are adding a summary from somewhere, put it in quotations, follow it with double dashes — and finally, where you found the information. Due to the way Evergreen displays it does not currently allow you to see the $c in the OPAC but putting the source in that subfield is also correct practice.

=520 \\$a“Foxes are tricky devils and this is how to tame them.” –Back cover.

=520 \\$a“Foxes are tricky devils and this is how to tame them.” $c–Back cover.

When you hold shift and paste your copied text, it puts it into plain text format, which is often less problematic in the cataloging module.

You should be adding sources to your record if the information is missing and there is one available from the back cover or the book jacket.

Call for cataloging concerns

None

Reminders

There are a couple things that have undergone wording changes in the upgrade in an effort to be more consistent.

“Copy alerts” and “copy notes” are now “item notes” and “item alerts”, respectively.

“Volume”, in several instances, is now “Call number.”

Item alerts can be added to items from the item status screen and it may be possible to add the alert to multiple items at a time. Beth also has created an any event type in the item alerts so you no longer have to do a separate normal checkin and normal checkout. Renewing an item will not trigger item alerts.

Digital bookplates are a new feature, and can be used for local collections. They are searchable in the OPAC. Since the local information is usually not appropriate to put in the MARC record, this is another avenue for libraries to put in local, searchable info. Also, please use consistent terminology, otherwise this is significantly less useful. This can be found in item attributes under “Item tags”.

There are now baskets in the search display and you can now put items into your basket. That basket can be converted into a bucket, or you can add items into an existing record bucket (not item bucket). If patrons place holds from buckets, it does title level holds.

April 6th is the next committee meeting.
