Cataloging committee meeting – December 3rd 2018
Cataloging committee meeting – 12/03/2018 @ 11am (PST) via GoToMeeting
Approve October Meeting minutes
John asked for motions to accept. Dea Nowell made a motion to approve the minutes as presented, Ann Zuehlke seconded through typing. John then asked for anyone who disapproved and no one responded so they were minutes were approved. He gave a brief reminder on how to locate them on the Sage website, by clicking on Cataloging along the top bar and then at the bottom of the drop down is Cataloging Committee.
Read along trainings
Read-along training video (Part 1)
According to Anna the recording of the Read-along training is on Sage website as well as the pdf of the slides themselves under the resources section. Part 2 will be December 6th at 1PM, Beth will send out connection information with cheat sheets provided by Anna. This will help with part 2 of the training since it will include hands on work. The training will be focusing on the 006 and 008 fields. Even if you don’t catalog read-alongs this is still a useful training in both the 006 and 008 field.
Series documentation
Series documentation not yet finished by this cataloging meeting, hopefully the document will be available in the next couple weeks once the loose ends are tied up. Beth touched on the series display in the catalog, she’s looking at making changes so the 800 $p field shows and other changes that will make it more visible for patrons. Anna clarified the need for this to be showing.
505 Indexing
Beth is making sure that the 505 $t field index was created in the upgrade. She’s looking into it, if you have problems with it please email her.
Evergreen update
JonGeorg explained that there is a mobile bug that does not allow people to log in properly, it doesn’t allow you to choose a work station so you can’t log in as staff. That is fixed in 3.2 and 3.1.8, They might upgrade to 3.1.8 sooner since it will be less of a change than 3.2.
Beth feels the upgrade went well; we’re no longer having the searching issues we were having prior to the upgrade. No major issues have been found, and there were some error messages that have been resolved. There are some random z39.50 errors but it’s not on every record so they’re trying to resolve that. Please report any issues, as they’re able to track down and fix the issue with more feedback.
Web client discussion/training
John Brockman encouraged everyone to take advantage of the web client training resources, and become familiar with how it works. There are going to be separate training sessions specifically devoted to individual questions that people have. Beth does want to have regular Cataloging training sessions on the web client on Thursdays for a couple weeks, except the Thursday after Christmas. First one would be December 13th at 1PM.
Training resources:
Setting up and logging into the Evergreen web client
Evergreen 3.0 series cataloging Changes (North Texas)
Evergreen 3.0 Series cataloging Changes Addendum (North Texas)
Beth explained that the web client is the way of the future and all the improvements are focused on that. It’s not an immediate change, but this is an opportunity to get familiar with the web client and make adjustments. There are topics for trainings, like making adjustments to copy templates, but if anyone has questions they should contact Beth and JonGeorg.
John let Beth know he didn’t have to remake his copy templates but just had to make minor adjustments. This might not be the case for everyone. Anna explained that her template titles transferred but the content did not.
John did show how to change individual copies when you are adding several items at one time. He also gave a glimpse into how authorities are linked in the web client. A couple catalogers mentioned that they have been working in the web client.
Anna explained that there was a problem with batch importing and batch editing. Beth did say there was a bug and that it is still an open ticket and unresolved. Beth did say that there might be some workarounds. This is an issue with OCLC and CatExpress.
The display icons in the search were updated in the staff client, but for some reason did not change in the web client and the public Sage searches.
Beth said there was an extension called Hatch that she was going to start talking about, and if you elect to use that add-on it will store the workstation settings in Hatch instead of in the browser. She’s going to talk about it in the next week or so. Anna said she saw some bugs with Hatch, that it can cause problems with the basic functionality of Sage. John said that it didn’t allow anyone at the Baker Library to use the web client. Beth said they will look into it. Anna also reported she had issues downloading and using the new staff client on her home computer. Beth said it may be the anti-virus program and she’s available to work through the problem with Anna.
Next meeting is Monday February 4th, 2019.
