Note regarding 710
Some 710 entries were not being indexed correctly in the catalog. Consequently, some corporate names were not searchable (e.g. Columbia Pictures). This problem has been corrected with the exception of some older records that have not been fixed yet.
790
If the authorized name for an author is different from what is listed on the item, the record may need a 790. If you have a situation like this, please contact your mentor and the mentor will add an appropriate 790 if needed. Please don’t delete or add 790 fields in existing Sage records.
Examples:
Authorized heading: =100 1\$aGotoge, Koyoharu,$d1988-
Author’s name on item: =790 1\$aGotouge, Koyoharu
Authorized heading: =100 1\$aJance, Judith A.
Author’s name on item: =790 1\$aJance, J. A.
Audn fixed field
After much discussion and thought regarding this issue, it has been decided that Sage will no longer assign “e” in the Audn fixed field exclusively to materials with explicit or mature content. Instead of “e” meaning “only for adults”, it now means “intended for adults”. Previously, materials that were “intended for adults” were coded blank in this fixed field, and that is still acceptable. Please use other note fields in the record (e.g. 521), to convey information regarding explicit or mature content. Catalogers may need to clear their browser cache to see the updated ages information in the Audn fixed field.
New Sage-specific practices document
Heather Spry has compiled a document regarding consortium specific practices that have been adopted in Sage. In the new RDA content standard, there is much more flexibility in how content can be described, and this document consolidates the local cataloging policies that have been established. This document has been emailed to the Sage Cat email list, and will be accessible via the reconfigured website.
LitF
When cataloging novels, please use the more generic “1” in the LitF fixed field, rather than “f”. While technically correct, this will eliminate these items from search results while using the LitF search parameter in Evergreen. Additionally, when importing graphic or comic materials, it is not uncommon to see these coded “0” in LitF. Historically, many libraries included these in their non-fiction collections under 741.5 despite the fact that they are fiction. Consequently, catalogers may still see this when importing in the Z39.50 interface. Please make sure that these are also coded “1” in LitF rather than “0” or “c”.
Goodreads demonstration for checking series information
After the Library of Congress authorities, FantasticFiction has been Sage’s top authority for checking series titles and numeration. However, due to more errors and missing information discovered in Fantastic Fiction, Goodreads.com should be used instead. You may use the series information with or without an account. Rather than detail the demonstration here, it is recommended to view the recorded video. The video link is posted at the top of this document. When information conflicts between the Library of Congress authorities and Goodreads, Library of Congress should be used.
Introduction to MARC course (MARC Tutorial)
This course is a great refresher course for current CAT2 catalogers or for CAT3 catalogers wanting to become CAT2. It is available through the Nebraska Library Commission and is self-guided, at-your-own-pace. Please email Beth or your mentor if you are interested or would like details.
Evergreen update and test catalog demonstration
Beth will be doing two trainings this week regarding the next Evergreen update on April 19. These trainings will be recorded and made available for those who cannot attend.
Mentor/Mentee distribution
There will be some shuffling around of mentors and mentees as we have some new catalogers and new mentors. If your mentor has changed, they should be contacting you.
