Recorder, Beth Longwell
Attending: Dea Nowell—Chairperson (Umatilla Co. SLD); Beth Longwell (Sage); Joyce McCurdy, Darlyne Johnson, Valeria Gardner (Ontario Community Library); Lisa Hauner (OTLD); Tracy Hayes (Lake County); Carmen Wickam and John Brockman (BCLD), Heather Estrada (BMCC)
The Cataloging Committee meeting minutes from February 6, 2017 were presented. Motion to accept them as written was made by Carmen Wickam; second by Heather; none opposed.
Z39.50 order of fields issue – Evergreen developers will not be fixing this in the staff client. It is fixed in the web client. The web client will be available in the Fall.
Cat1 requirements – Mentors were working on a draft which was taken to the Sage Council. The Council had some suggestions for changes and mentors will be working on this at their next meeting. The Council wanted a specific list of requirements that applicants needed to meet before moving to Cat1 level. They also wanted an application form for this process. Questioned whether the 6-month requirement was necessary.
New cataloging contact spreadsheet – Beth put up an updated spreadsheet with additional information about the catalogers.
RDA and RDA bibs – 260 and 264: Do we keep both? At this point we will retain both. The 264 is now set to be primary display. Beth pulled a report and 1000 records out of a million have both. When bring records in from z39.50, a cataloger who knows RDA can change the 260 to a 264 but we are not asking catalogers to do it at this time.
Additional training opportunities – Dea hasn’t had a lot of feedback on this. Suggestion was made that training on indicators would be good. What she has so far: series authorities and how to choose name and enumeration, parts managements, 245 subfields, format icons and where they come from, 264 indicators.
Fictitious characters – Since RDA rules have come out there has been a shift in how we look at subjects. A group is moving fictitious character headings from 650 to 600. Sherlock Holmes was given as an example. Fictitious character is listed in the subfield c if there is a conflict/duplicate in the name authorities. Another new addition with RDA is assigning relationship. Should we add the assigning of subfield e to the training list? Yes, but toward the end so that we can get some of our documentation up-to-date.
Update on Series display functionality – 830 was not displaying but now is. The series link in the catalog was broken and now is fixed.
We have a new mentor on-board – Jenny Simpson.
Next meeting with be June 5, 2017.
Meeting adjourned at 11:40 am.
